  • Club Days: is an all day event hosted by the county. It is an event that allows 4-Hers to demonstrate their talents in the areas of dancing, playing a musical instrument, singing, acting, and public speaking. Club Days will be held on February 10, 2007 at Spring Hill High school. Entries are due in the extension office by January 12th. Dance teams are being sent in by Amy.

  • The club has decided to participate as a group in the Country –Western line dancing event at Club Days. We will have two teams. There will be a junior team for ages 7-12 years old and a senior team for ages 13 and older. It is not too late to sign up. If you are interested please make sure you talk to Clarissa Shields (441-9347) or Alyssa Morrison (422-3353). The next practice will be January 11 at 6:30 to 7:30 for the juniors and 7:30 to 8:30 for the seniors. Thanks to the Morrison’s for donating CD’s for Clarissa to burn the music onto for the dancers to practice with. Thanks to Clarissa for all the work of burning them.

  • As Amy Shields, the parent in charge for the dance team, is unable to attend the practice on Sunday, January 14ththe Voelker’s were willing to step up and supervise the practice. If you are participating in the dance team you don’t need to worry about sending in the entry form. Amy Shields will turn it in. If you have decided to compete in other events, you will need to complete the entry form yourself, but make sure you indicate that you are also dancing with the Jo. Co. Horse Club. If you need a copy of the entry form, you can get it from the web-site: www.oznet.ksu.edu/johnson/newsletter.htm.

  • Horse Panorama: This is a state event, held at the Rock Springs Ranch near Junction City. This year the date is February 10 and 11th. Yes, there is a conflict with Club Days. We have been given the dance slot at 8:00am and plan to leave immediately afterwards for Rock Springs. Deadline for entries into the state office is January 19th.. Pat, at the extension office, needs the money and entry forms by January 16th. This will give her time to compile all the paperwork. If you are planning on going you need to call Sandy ASAP. Those planning to attend MUST register online ASAP.
Horse Panorama is a quiz bowl. The kids are divided up into teams with other 4-Hers across the state of Kansas. They are asked equine related questions. There is another event called Hippology, where the kids take a written test and complete hands-on related tasks which might include identifying different grains, tack items, etc. This year they will be having Horse Jeopardy for kids whose ages are 7-9 years old. The kids also have a chance to participate in a public speaking event. The talk has to be horse related. There is a logo and photography contest too. For more information click on the following link: http://www.kansas4H.org/Horse/Panorama/Default.htm

  • Christmas Committee Update: Brenda says that we received a grant for $1,000.00 from Wal-Mart. We also had $165 from our 4-Hers that donated and $145 that the Horse Club Group donated. We spent $485 on the family we adopted; $200 on teen items for the Spring Hill Center to distribute; and $625 on Toys-4-Tots. On Saturday we shopped, then delivered cards and ornaments to the residents of a retirement community. Then we went to help the marines organize the Toys-4-Tots project. They had most of the work done so we got to play around with them and talk to them about how the project works and the on-going war overseas. Julia read thank you notes from the Spring Hill Center and the family we adopted. Both were very grateful for Horse Club’s generosity.

  • Kansas State Horse Judging: Nancy R. spoke about the Horse Judging Clinic that will be held on Feb. 17th at K-State in Manhattan. Registration is at 8:30AM and it concludes at 2pm. There will be classes with live horses, both halter classes and performance classes. This is the clinic that many people take to get certified for judging. They give reasons for their points they award, explaining everything to you. You can get more info from Nancy R. or Julie Voge at jvoge@ksu.edu. Pre-registration is highly recommended and is due Fri., Feb. 1st.

  • IMPORTANT FORMS NEEDED!!! We are sorry, but some of our members forms were lost in the shuffle between the Extension Office and us. • Most club members seemed to like the newer detailed agendas sent out ahead of time online via email. Please remember to check your email before next month’s meeting or you can find the agenda online at our web-site at www.jocohorseclub.org.

  • New 4-H Competition Age: It was brought up that the age for competing in 4-H is going to be gradually raised to age 10. The 7-9 year old group would not compete, but be learners without competition. If you have an opinion on this issue, please email Joyce and ask for Pat McNally’s address. Pat is whom you will write your email or letter of concern.

  • Senior District Show Plan Meeting: If you wish to attend, there will be a meeting on Jan. 27th at the Douglas County Extension Office at 10AM. They will discuss the show. You also must have passed Level One Testing or Level Two Testing, depending on your age, in order to compete. This is the show which qualifies you to attend and compete at the State Fair level.

  • Horse Action Team: There will be the yearly Horse Action Team meeting held during Panorama on Saturday evening, Feb. 10th. See Joyce for more info.

  • Start thinking about that your horses need to be identified by May 1st to show this year. If you need id papers, check your 4-H binder or get one from the extension office.

  • Thanks to the Curtice’s and Snyder’s for providing refreshments. Please check the web-site to see if you are in charge of next month’s refreshments.
