Febuary 2007 Hoofprints

  • We had 3 visitors.
  • Welcome to our newest member, Anna! ALL NEW MEMBERS, please see Heidi or Maria Katt for a new member book and see Sandy for your new 4-H t-shirt. OLD MEMBERS, please add Abby C. and Anna L. to your directory.
  • Happy Birthday to Nancy R. and Angela.
  • The club received a nice thank you note from Brandy for the meals after her recent surgery. Glad you’re feeling better, Brandy, and glad the club could help a family in need.
Also forwarded to everyone, via email, was a thank you note from the Smith family regarding those that sent flowers, meals, snacks, coloring books, balloons or visits to Danielle.
  • Our Historians would like some great pics of Club Days, Panorama and any articles on our 4-Hers.
  • The Reporter would like everyone to be sure and check out the website (www.jocohorseclub.org) and be sure they have your current email address.
  • There was no County Council meeting this month to report on.
  • Emily and Andrea have taken over the Dog Training Project for the Smith Family. They had a meeting before our regular meeting to discuss what to expect and what to bring to Dog Training that begins Feb. 21st. Be sure your green cards are in to Emily. Thanks to Sandy and Emily for taking the extra classes that need instructors due to Danielle’s illness. If you signed up to bring items for the concession stand the first training session or signed up to come early for set-up, please follow through with that commitment. If you have questions, contact Emily.
  • Woodworking Project: We have 4 members that are participating in this project. Anyone else who wishes to join, contact Nancy V.
  • Community Leaders Report:
Be sure to turn in your horse ID papers by May 1st so you can show with us this year.
Clean up after yourselves at our monthly meetings so the leaders and their kids don’t have to do it all.
  • Danielle Update:
She is in the hospital for a planned 7 more days and had another surgery on Tuesday evening. A sign-up sheet was passed around for people to sign up to provide snacks for Brenda and Danielle at the hospital, and to provide meals for the family at their home over the next 3 weeks. Contact Lauren C. if you still would like to sign up. The extension office has offered to be a meal runner for those that want to provide meals or snacks and can’t make it to the hospital or their home. Contact Pat at the extension office or Lauren C. to set this up.
  • Nebraska Expo Trip:
Joyce announced that there were extra spots and filled them at the meeting. She needed the money that night. The Expo trip is now going to include a tour of the Nebraska University campus for those interested. Please see the website or your last agenda sent to you via email for specifics on what to bring and the schedule of the trip. The only thing that needed to be added was the meeting time for departure: 6:30am. If you want to eat at McDonald’s before departure, please arrive earlier than 6:30am.
It was proposed, voted and approved that the club invite and pay the way of one of our new Youth Directors, Abby, to join us for the NE trip. Lauren V. is doing the inviting. We saw her at Club Days and she is excited about joining us and will make sure her calendar will allow.
  • Trail Ride Committee:
Monique reported that the committee has chosen some dates and locations for our 2 trail rides this year. The first will be on March 24, with a rain date of April 21st. I think she said we’ll depart from Kill Creek Park on our horses at noon? She’ll bring directions to the next meeting. Although this is an easy trail, all trail riders are required to wear helmets due to rocks along the trail. There will be 2 streams which your horse will need to cross. All riders need an adult that will be responsible for them, either riding or hiking. Brandy would like to go if someone has a horse they could loan her for the day. A sign-up sheet went around for those interested in attending. If you weren’t at the meeting please contact Monique asap at 484-5942.
  • Club Days were held on Feb 10th at Spring Hill H.S. and both dance teams earned top purple! We had other club members that displayed their talents also. I know Julia got a purple for her project talk. Mattie did her own dance and did a Jr. Demo. Julia also did a piano piece. Anna did piano and a historian speech (the new category). Tate did a Jr. reading and a project talk. Thanks to all the parents that helped make the time for all the projects. Thanks to Clarissa and Alyssa and Amy for leading our dance teams. It was another successful year for Horse Club at Club Days. EVERYONE: Please note that if you will be attending Regionals the location has moved. It’s still on the 24th, but will now be held at Lawrence High School in Lawrence.
  • Nancy R. discussed the Horse Judging Seminar held in Manhattan on Feb 17th. If you haven’t already registered you need to do so as the deadline has already passed. Registration begins at 8:30am and the day concludes at 2pm. Riding arrangements were discussed. If you have questions, contact Nancy R. or Julie Voge at jvoge@ksu.edu or 785-532-1264.
  • Horse Panorama is on Feb 10-11 and we have 4 kids and 3 adults attending. Update: As of the 10th, we had several sick participants, so everyone cancelled except Abby and her mom. Let us know how it went Abby and Angela.
  • Training Clinics:
Monique spoke about this. She is setting up several training opportunities for our 4-Hers. Lessie Deiner will do a 3-week session (one evening per week) focusing on speed event training. There will be a different speed discipline each week, such as barrels, poles, and flags.
She is speaking to another trainer about another training class and will get back with us on that.
Alyssa will be doing her halter and showmanship clinic again this year.
Jo of Roy Frey’s Western Wear will be coming out before the April meeting to show this season’s clothes for showing in the arena..what’s hot and what’s not, etc. She may also bring someone to discuss how to care for your hat.
Monique is also checking into some Open Arena time so the kids can bring their horses and just play together. (This is a good reason to get that arena in shape!)
  • Our June show dates have been cancelled as Marlin double booked them, forgetting about our show dates. There is a proposal to have a 2-day show at the first part of June that would include spending the night at the fairgrounds. Emily is heading up a committee to look into that. We have the arena reserved for both days that weekend regardless. If you want on the committee, contact Emily.
  • Please remember to print out your Agenda before the meeting and bring it with you to the monthly meetings. The agenda will be posted on the website and is sent via email to everyone in the club.
  • Alyssa spoke about her experience with Rodeo Bible Camp and encouraged everyone to attend. The info is in your agenda. If you have further questions, call Alyssa or Joyce and they may be able to answer them.
  • Lauren updated the empty spots on the Host/Hostess list for our monthly meetings. New signups were: Freeman’s for June drinks; Sosa’s for Aug. snacks; Shelton’s for Aug. drinks; Deiner’s for Sept. drinks. Thanks for finishing out the list for the year. Lauren V will call and remind you of your time slot. You can also check on the website. There is a tab for Host/Hostess.
  • The Sr. and Jr. Dance Teams performed at the meeting. Great job teams!
  • Michelle is putting in the sweatshirt orders this Wed, Feb 14th. Call her for questions.
  • If you have any trophies that you would like to pass on to the club so we can refurbish them and shine them for awards for this year, please let one of the leaders know or bring them to the next meeting. Thank you for giving to the next generation of winners!
  • Thanks to Richardson’s for snacks and McCracken’s for drinks this month!
    4-H Reporter,
    Garrett & Nancy Vaughn
